Best time to visit Seoul: a month-by-month honest guide

Blossom, monsoon, autumn fire and real winter — when Seoul is at its best, and when it's cheapest.

Ask ten people for Seoul's best season and you'll get two answers: blossom spring and fiery autumn. They're right — but every season has a deal to offer if you know what you're trading.

Spring (March–May) — the blossom bet

Cherry blossoms peak around late March to early April, parks turn pink, and the whole city picnics. It's also peak price and peak crowd season, and blossom timing shifts yearly — come for 'spring in Seoul', with blossom as a bonus, and you can't be disappointed. Fine dust can visit in spring; sensitive travelers pack masks.

Summer (June–August) — hot, wet, alive

The monsoon (usually late June into July) brings dramatic rain, then August brings heat and humidity that test everyone. In exchange: the lowest hotel prices of the year, night markets in full swing, and a city that parties late to escape the day. Pack light clothes and a plan B — our rainy-day Seoul guide was written for exactly this.

Autumn (September–November) — the connoisseur's pick

Crisp air, blue skies, and from late October the maples and ginkgos ignite — Bukhansan mountain and the palace grounds become paintings. If you can only come once and dates are flexible, come in late October or early November. Book hotels early; locals love this season too.

Winter (December–February) — cold, bright, festive

Real winter: below freezing, sometimes far below — but dry, sunny and sharp. Ice-skating at City Hall, Christmas lights, steaming street food, and the possibility of snow on palace roofs, which might be Seoul's most beautiful sight of all. Crowds (except holidays) are the year's thinnest.

The two holiday warnings

Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (autumn harvest) are Korea's great family holidays: many small restaurants and shops close, trains sell out, palaces often open free. Magical if you plan around it, frustrating if it surprises you — check the year's dates before booking.
